The Cherry Pickers of Cookham Dean, organisers of the Gravity Grand Prix, have announced that they are hoping to stage the event on Sunday 12th September 2021.
The recent government announcements have paved the way to start making preparations. The Cherry Pickers will take account of all the guidance from national and local authorities and also listen carefully to the views of the residents of Cookham Dean. There is no final commitment yet and they will continue to review the situation between now and the end of May. They do, however, want to get a date in everyone's diaries and have the contestants thinking about their karts which often take more than three months to build.
The Cherry Pickers hope to get up to 30 karts to accept the "Challenge of the hill" and sign up to race down the 350m course from the junction of Church Road and Spring Lane almost as far as Uncle Tom's Cabin. It's not just about speed as trophies are also awarded for kart design, amusement and build quality.
Initial responses from the community and competitors have been very positive with locals looking forward to some fun after such an extended period. The organisations that are supported by the event also urgently need funds. Since its inception in 2007, the event has raised well over £150,000 and enabled the Cherry Pickers to provide in excess of £130,000 of support to the Thames Valley Air Ambulance.
The organisers are very clear that the event will only go ahead if it is safe and sensible to do so and there is good local support.
