I would like to let you know, that last week, someone turned up at my door, claiming to be from EON (which is in fact my energy supplier), saying they'd been sent to check my smart metre (which is inside the house), I had not been expecting anyone and so did not let him in.

Since this, I have contacted EON, who have confirmed, they did not send anybody to my house and therefore I can only conclude, this was a scam, trying to get access inside my property.

I have a video bell so can download the footage and send it to the police.

It may be worth letting other neighbours know of this?

I live in North Ascot.

Kind Regards

Chloe

Thanks Chloe

Then firmly, but politely close and lock your front door !

MEMBERS’ COMMENTS:

Good Morning Jeff, I hope you are keeping well ,

I received this phishing email this morning, which could worry some of our members.  It’s quite long and will leave it to the neighbourhood TVP to edit as necessary. I am sure this one warrants wider exposure as to the lengths the scammers are going.

Kind Regards Brian

Thanks Brian.

It is long and very threatening.  The email comes from ‘Kaitlin’.  The reference is ‘Waiting for payment’ and it is simply addressed ‘Hello’.
It says ‘Bad news – I have access to all your internet devices …… and have been tracking you.  I have also started to use your email, but you cannot see it.  I installed a Trojan on all your systems, when you opened an email from me.  I now have all your contacts, photos and files.

Kaitlin then adds that she can see Brian is a ‘fan of Porn’ and goes on in the usual way.  She wants $1,750 in Bitcoin within 48 hours, or she will send video footage to everyone in his personal address book.

If you get one of these – Stop, breathe, think – then bin it !

NEXT:  It can work the other way !!!!

Hi Jeff,
FYI, I received this. "Dear Customer" email from Gov.Uk and I was immediately on my guard that this was a scam.

In addition "Why you may not eligible for the fourth grant" rang warning bells.

I logged into my Government Gateway tax account, as suggested in the email, to see whether there was anything there, indicating a problem with my tax affairs, - there was nothing.
I then forwarded it to the HMRC phishing email address, to report a possible scam. They emailed me back, to confirm that it was genuine !

What chance has anyone got, when the genuine emails, appear to the recipient to be fake?
What gave me second thoughts before I would have binned it, was there was no obvious information that the email was requesting from me. (No requests for DOB, bank details etc.)
Regards

John

This was the email:

Dear customer,
We are writing to you as you’ve previously claimed a Self-Employment Income Support Scheme (SEISS) grant. Based on the latest information we hold, we do not think you will be eligible to claim the fourth SEISS grant, which covers the period of February 2021 to April 2021.

We realise the significant financial impact that this might have, which is why we have contacted you as soon as possible. We would also like to provide you with details of other support that you may be eligible for.

Why you may not eligible for the fourth grant …………..
Access the National Cyber Security Centre’s guide on how to stay secure online and protect yourself and your business against cyber crime by searching ‘Cyber Aware’ on GOV.UK.
Yours sincerely

Chief Executive and First Permanent Secretary – HMRC

I agree – you just have to be cautious and think !
