18/5 Tuesday. lots of reports of Nottingham Knockers from right across Windsor & Datchet all day, up to nearly 10 p.m.. Reports– going door to door, selling household products. Please can everyone be aware. The only items which can be sold door to door without a Pedlars Certificate, are books and food. To sell anything else, they need to produce a small white Pedlars Certificate. These are issued at any police station, for use across the UK, but they are only issued after a police check, if the person is of ‘good character’. So – the minute they say they have been to prison and are on a rehabilitation programme, you know they don’t have one. If asked, they produce an A4 yellow ‘Hawkers Identification’. These mean nothing and they print them off themselves. PLEASE REMEMBER OUR NHW MOTTO
‘I am sorry, I do not buy goods and services at the door’, then firmly, but politely close and lock the door, as occasionally they are abusive. This is a way of locating elderly vulnerable residents who are easily parted from their money and they get an extra payment for each address they supply.
DON’T LET IT BE YOU. THOSE LISTS ARE SOLD ONTO OTHER COLD CALLERS – THEY ARE CALLED ‘SUCKERS LISTS’ and you do not want to get on one !!!

I have checked the police computers and though we do get lost dogs, stolen dogs are extremely rare. These are the figures are for the whole of the Thames Valley – 3 counties, Bucks, Berks & Oxon – as always with the caveat – reported to the police:
From 01/01/21-18/05/21
8 reported stolen across the force, cross referenced with ‘Doglost’ or officer’s unofficial reports.
Of these:
1 recovered (little dachshund - MILO from Chipping Norton stolen from car back in Feb/march)
1 never really stolen (husky - GINA found wandering at a kennels near to home at Stokenchurch)
1 blue Staffordshire terrier reported as stolen, but no evidence to support a theft –– quite recent
1 ownership issue- dog was returned to breeder after being found injured and the breeder refused to give it back to the “owner” due to possibly mistreatment by him
1 puppy stolen by a purchaser who went to breeders address in Slough and took puppy but did not make payment
So I think I have 3 actual crimes with outstanding dogs at this time
NANCY a cocker spaniel pup from Wooburn Green in Feb
BETTY a cocker spaniel from Westbrook near Newbury together with PICKLE an adult female Cocker Spaniel – went from outdoor garden kennels again Feb time
LOLA from Princes Risborough, a black and tan cocker spaniel female.
1 additional attempted theft (in last few days), where it looks like a young boy and his puppy were accosted by a possibly drunk man, who tried to unclip the dog from its collar. –dog not stolen. NOT IN RBWM
Whatever is being discussed on social media, it does not appear to be filtering through to dog theft reports in this force.
I may not have captured everything, but this is 95% of what has been reported to us.
We, as a force, are also part of a ‘National Dog Theft Working Group’ involving 16 forces, who are looking at best practice across all strands of investigation and prevention.
I hope this acts as reassurance. If anyone has been a victim of the ransom scam after posting they have lost their dog, can they please let me know, particularly if you paid the ransom and did – or did not – get your dog back.
