FIRST: A black Range Rover – was stolen - obviously to order in Windsor. It is a keyless fob entry. The owner still has both keys, but they must have been left near enough to the outside, for the signal to be copied - or 'relayed'.
The gadget costs many thousands of pounds and is used in organised crime.
Can I ask everyone who has keyless entry fob, to check how far the signal from the fob travels, enabling the car to be opened ? Some manufacturers have reduced the distance. It will take two people – one to stand at a distance with the fob and the other, to try and open a car door. Get the person with the fob, to walk closer and closer, until you find the exact distance range where the car will open. That is how far the signal travels and can be copied. That is the distance, the fob must be kept inside, from anyone outside, who has a signal copier.
More simple, is to make sure the fobs are always kept, when in the house in a ‘Faraday’ cage. A metal box made specifically for the purpose. These are easily available and are made to protect contactless credit cards. They are very inexpensive. Remove the plastic sleeves from inside and always, keep your fobs inside when not in use. If you don’t have one of those, keep them in a fridge ! Biscuit tins do not work !
I used to say you could also keep them in a microwave – as that is a Faraday cage - to contain and prevent the microwaves from escaping – until someone forgot they were in there and cooked their dinner ! The keys exploded inside and the microwave, was destroyed !!!! The advice was changed !
If you have a high value performance car – Range Rovers are always a target – the key fobs must be protected at all times.
