From Dawn:

Hi Jeff.

I'm sure you get these emails daily, but it's always good to remind people to be vigilant.

I received a call from a young-sounding man with a northern (possibly Newcastle) accent, around 7pm on Monday purporting to be from 'Nationwide Fraud Protection Team'

He told me that they had intercepted an attempt to use my debit card and he gave me the last four numbers – which were correct.  The offenders had tried to use my card spending £10 at Circuit Launderette.  He wanted to check whether this was this me ?  It wasn't.

He then said that he needed to put a block on my card and he even confirmed my postcode.  He seemed to have a lot of information about me.  I did not volunteer the information !

In order to block my account, he needed to go through my security with me.  He said he needed this, to confirm I am who I say I am, so he asked for my Date of Birth, which I stupidly gave him this.

He then wanted numbers 1,3 & 5 of my bank passcode.

At that point, I said I would call him back, as I had no idea that he, was who he said he was !  In response, he said he would send a secure message to me, with the phone number to get back in contact with him.

I said no thank you - I will google the number !  I did that and spoke with the building society fraud dept., who confirmed that this was an attempted scam.

Whilst I was on the phone to the real building society fraud team.  I received a text message, from the scammer, looking like the genuine building society – to whom I was talking, which stated 'A new device - Akib's iPhone -  has just signed into your building society App.  Please let us know if this was not you 01206700179 ?’.

This message was not from the real building society fraud team, but the fraudsters.

The real building society were wonderful, they confirmed that no access had been achieved, they blocked all my accounts for me and cancelled my card.  They also and helped me reset my passcode - just in case.

I am not frail, nor vulnerable but it is scary how convincing these people can be!

Just thought I'd share to warn and protect other people !

Dawn

Many thanks Dawn.  It is scary how good and convincing these people are.  The threat of someone scamming our cards, always catches us off guard, particularly if someone is offering to help and protect us – even though they are lying to us and want to steal our life savings !

Dawn did exactly the right thing.  NEVER DIVULGE PERSONAL INFORMATION TO ANYONE THAT COLD CALLS – YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHO THEY ARE.  EVEN IF THEY SEEM TO HAVE A LOT OF INFORMATION ABOUT YOU.  Put the phone down, find the number to call back from another source – never the one they give you and check – just as Dawn did.
