A Cookham History Colonel Ricardo |
||
Colonel Ricardo was a great
benefactor of Cookham. He appeared to be a larger than life character and
was said to be the inspiration for Kenneth Grahame's Toad from the Wind in
the Willows. He drove round in a bright yellow Rolls Royce, the first car
in the village, and would stop and offer lifts to Cookham residents.
He bequeathed the King's Hall to Cookham as a reading room, this is now the Stanley Spencer Gallery. |
