I HAVE JUST RECEIVED A REMINDER – IN CASE YOU GET SCAMMED OR RECEIVE AN ATTACK TO YOUR COMPUTER – PLEASE REMEMBER TO BACK UP AT LEAST ONCE A MONTH – JUST IN CASE.

When I speak to IT people – they sometimes do it daily – to preserve anything they have done as recently as possible before the breach !

AND – WE ARE SO LUCKY TO HAVE SO MANY IT GURUS OUT THERE, WILLING TO HELP AND OFFER ADVICE:

Hey Jeffrey,

I just wanted to call out re your scam / fraud reference: it’s quite a common one, the NCSC detail it here. https://www.ncsc.gov.uk/news/public-urged-to-be-aware-of-scams-post-data-breaches

To offer a brief summary of how the hackers got your guys passwords:

What happens is: a given website/service/online store will be hacked and their passwords be leaked, this is a depressingly common occurrence.  The service https://haveibeenpwned.com/ keeps track of this and can, when you have signed up, to send notifications of these password leakage.

An ‘entrepreneurial hacker’ will see an email address and password in a data breach, then email the user with this type of threat, suggesting they have all manner of madness to release, unless the ransom is paid.

The most important thing to remember is that the hacker never really has anything other than the leaked password !

The things to do to protect oneself from this, ranges from hard to simple.

The best, yet the hardest, is to use a different password for every website.

the simplest is to change your password as soon as possible if you see a breach notification from a provider or alert from service like https://haveibeenpwned.com/

Consider changing passwords regularly !!!

Powering everything down/paying a local shop to do a clean up probably isn't needed, when the majority of these are just chancers.

Cheers
Josh
Thanks Josh – we are all really grateful for this information – and – reassurance !
