Fifteenth Gravity Grand Prix will be the best ever
The organisers of Cookham Dean’s annual soap box race are planning for their best ever event. The Cherry Pickers of Cookham Dean, who stage the event every September, have had a record number of karts enter this year’s race and have set up more off course attractions than ever before. The Gravity Grand Prix involves 30 unpowered karts racing downhill for 700 metres, starting at the junction of Church Road and Spring Lane and finishing in Hills Lane, just uphill from Uncle Tom’s Cabin.
Running this Sunday, 11th September in Cookham Dean, the racing starts just after 1pm and finishes with the prize giving at 4:45pm. The entries, which are all built by their drivers and support teams, are a mix of speedy runners and the often slower fun karts. Prizes are awarded for best design, best engineering, speed and reflecting the spirit of the event.
Entry to the event is free and plenty of free parking is available. The Cherry Pickers hope to raise at least £15,000 on the day with all the profits going to the Thames Valley Air Ambulance. This year is the fifteenth Gravity Grand Prix, which started in 2007. Over that time, over £150,000 has been raised for the Air Ambulance.
The leader of the organising team, Max Stevenson, said “Following last year’s very successful event, we have been planning for a year to make this the biggest and best Gravity Grand Prix so far. We hope that lots of people turn out to support our kart racers and the very important charity that we are raising funds for.
