The Cookham Bridge, which was constructed in 1867, could be given a new makeover after a condition survey revealed it needed extensive work done after surveyors concluded it was in a ‘very poor’ condition.

According to the report, which was conducted by Project Centre – which was also commissioned by the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead Council – the bridge on Sutton Road has not seen any major works since it was strengthened in the 1980s.

“Recent structural inspections have highlighted significant defects,” the report read, “which if left unattended, will increase the risk to the structural integrity of the bridge.”

When the works have concluded, it will ensure the well-used bridge is ‘fit for purpose’ and safe. If approved, the works could start in July 2023 and be completed by November 2024. The bridge could be closed for 50 working days (or 10 weeks).

The defects include severe surface corrosion to the deck ends around the bearing locations caused by excessive water leakage, displace and corroded bearing block, failed expansion joint, and general repaint work.

To conduct the works, if granted by planning officers at the Royal Borough Council, a ‘significant amount of disruptive work’ would be required.

This means commuters that need to go back and forth from Maidenhead or Buckinghamshire may have to be rerouted somewhere else while the works are conducted.
