People using Royal Mail are being warned that they need to use up old-style stamps to avoid potential extra charges. New stamps, which feature a barcode, are now commonplace.

Royal Mail had originally said that the ones they replaced would need to be used by the end of January, or swapped for new ones using a "Stamp Swap Out" form. However, it later added another six months for customers to make use of the old stamps, extending the deadline to July 31.

With that date now drawing nearer, people are being reminded that old-style stamps without barcodes need to be used or swapped soon. Customers have been sent leaflets in the post to remind them of the new deadline.

The leaflets state: "Time is running out to use your old non-barcoded stamps. You have until July 31 to use your non-barcoded 'regular' stamps.

"They will not be accepted for postage after this date and you could be subject to surcharge. Alternatively, you can swap them for new barcoded stamps."

There is also a Stamp Swap Out form on the reverse. Alternatively you can download one to print out here.
