Can I remind everyone about our Summer Burglary Campaign, which deals with doors and windows left open for ventilation, in the hot weather.
Windows can only be left open - if you are in that room.
At this time of year, we get ‘walk in thefts’. Opportunist thieves are out and about, looking for anyone, who has made a mistake and compromised their security. If they hear you working in your garden - a hedge trimmer or mower - they may walk down any side access and try a back / side door. Most people don’t lock these, if working in the garden, as they are going in and out. The opportunist will simply try the door. If it is open, they will enter and scout around quickly looking for handbags, left on kitchen counter tops.
If you return and disturb them, they will have a story already prepared. You will be totally surprised, off guard and probably say - ‘What are you doing in my house’ ? They will respond -‘I am looking for John / Harry / Peter - whatever, he said to meet him here, doesn’t he live here’ ? You will be really confused and say- ‘NO’ ? They will then say, before you gather yourself together - ‘Sorry, wrong house’ - and they are gone.
You will stand there for a few minutes, totally confused - did that really happen? Later, you will find a purse missing from a handbag.
If you are working in your garden - tedious as it is - you must lock any rear side access doors, as you go in and out.
No windows can be left open on upper floors, if they are next to a porch, or perhaps a flat garage roof, which can be used to climb up. Wheelie bins, must be put out of sight, as they are often used, to climb onto flat roofs.
Small bathroom transom windows, must also be closed. Opportunists can reach in and open larger windows !

20/5 Wednesday 3.00 a.m. Windrush Way. The owners were awoken by someone tapping on their first floor bedroom window. They pulled back the curtains to see a man standing on a flat Perspex flat lean to roof. He asked if they had any cigarettes. They shouted that they were calling the police and he immediately climbed down and made off damaging a fence as he climbed over, to get away. He is described as white, with a small beard, wearing a T shirt and shorts. The police were called and attended immediately. They carried out an area search. They saw a man matching the description given. He was making off down a lane to Evenlode, but they lost him. They called in the dog team, who tracked the scent to various locations, but he was not located. If he was in that area, did he walk up and down your road / drive looking for crime opportunities? 19/5 - 20/5 Tuesday 5.30 p.m. / Wednesday 7 a.m. Choseley Road, Knowl Hill. The owner was awoken by car alarms sounding, but did not investigate. In the morning they found two cars on the drive with their windows smashed - Rayban sunglasses and loose change stolen. Ref. No: 43200148242

18/5 Monday 8 p.m. / 10.40 p.m. Clare Road. Black cab window smashed - tablet and coin holder stolen Ref. No: 43200145879. The police were also in the area and a man was arrested for other offences. He was searched and he had in his possession a brown crocodile leather wallet, which did not belong to him. Have you had such an item stolen?
