The coronavirus death toll in Berkshire has now reached more than 600.

The number includes 26 deaths in hospitals, a fall from 39 a week before, and 23 deaths in care homes, down from 43.

The figures, from the Office for National Statistics, are based on the number of deaths registered up to May 16, where Covid-19 is mentioned on the death certificate.

Between the start of the outbreak and May 8, there have been 639 deaths across Berkshire involving Covid-19.

Of those deaths, most (358) took place in hospital, but one in three (37per cent) were in care homes, a total of 234.

There were also 35 deaths recorded at home, seven in hospices, two in other communal establishments, and three elsewhere.

Other communal establishments include prisons, halls of residence, hotels, and sheltered accommodation, while elsewhere covers deaths outside and people declared dead on arrival at hospital.

Reading still has the highest number of recorded cases in the county, with 578 patients testing positive. Slough now has 449 cases.

Elsewhere, 372 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in West Berkshire, 442 in Wokingham, 283 in Windsor and Maidenhead, and 253 in Bracknell.

Across the South East, 551 deaths registered in the week ending May 8 mentioned coronavirus on the death certificate, down from 966 the week before.

Overall, there were 1,887 deaths registered that week - 966 fewer than the previous week.

That was 27per cent higher than, or 402 more deaths, than the five-year average (1,485 deaths) for the same week.

Figures across the UK

Across the UK, 41,020 deaths involving Covid-19 had been registered up to May 8.

That included 35,454 deaths in England, 1,775 in Wales, 3,213 in Scotland, and 578 in Northern Ireland.

In the week ending May 8, 3,930 deaths in England and Wales involved Covid-19, 31per cent of all deaths. The number was down by 2,105 compared with the previous week.

There were 1,986 Covid-19-related deaths in hospitals and 1,666 deaths in care homes - with care homes now making up two in five deaths.
