Tesco has announced that it is to close its Metro store in the Nicholsons Centre.
In a statement, the supermarket chain said it had shared with colleagues on Tuesday that it had taken the ‘difficult’ decision to close the Maidenhead town centre branch.

The store will remain open until Saturday, September 19, adding that it will be offering people alternative roles with Tesco ‘wherever possible’.

That really does bring home how the world is changing around us. I have hardly set foot in a supermarket since lockdown began and on the one occasion I did the experience was sufficiently surreal to remind me that frankly shopping is no longer fun in this socially distanced world. So now stuff is delivered to our door and we make use of local suppliers (not the big names) who can supply fresh vegetables, wine, cheese etc.

My partner and I have become used to cooking more and eating out - not at all - and today she made a wonderful dessert and I cooked the main course. We used to largely live off prepared meals but no longer. Until an effective vaccine is found and made available, as older folks we simply can't risk doing any of the things we used to take for granted, so it's not surprising to see Tesco make this decision. On the other hand we have discovered how much our local community in Cookham can provide us, how many wonderful small businesses we can support and frankly to see the giants like Tesco and Sainsburys etc suffer is not something I mourn a great deal.
