FIRST: ANOTHER ACTION FRAUD CRIME REPORTED TO US:
The victim was on the phone to a company for several hours one morning.  Their son then heard them hand over their full bank details as well as their driving licence number.  The son ended the call and phoned the bank.  £2,000 had already been withdrawn.  The bank were informed it was a scam and replaced the money, cancelled the card and protected the account.  It was also revealed that the victim had also received a call - supposedly from ‘SKY’, informing them that their router was malfunctioning and they needed a new one.  If they could have please the address for the new router and bank details for a deposit of £3,000 compensation !
This will not be happening as the account is now protected.  If you have a friend / relative who may be vulnerable to these types of scams - the answer is a call blocker phone.  These are readily available and inexpensive.  The phone blocks all calls, but those placed in the database - family, friends, doctors, hospitals, opticians etc..  If anyone else calls, they receive a message that all calls to that number are monitored. Please give your name.  The phone then flashes, to show an unrecorded number is ringing.  When you pick up the receiver you hear that x is calling, will you accept the call.  You press one number to restrict the call and it will never get through again, or to accept the call.  Everyone that I know who has one swears by it saying scam calls have stopped 100%.

NEXT: FROM TRADING STANDARDS:

Trading standards regionally, has seen an increase in doorstep crime. Consumers are encouraged not to deal with people who cold call at the door and offer to do work, no matter how cheap the deal appears, or how persuasive the seller.

Areas often targeted are, cleaning of gutters and roofing work, tree work, gardening and driveway work.

We are also aware of traders operating, who cold call on the phone offering a free survey for green energy products, such as spray loft insulation, solar panels and solar panel maintenance. The trader then comes out the next day and consumers are signed up there and then, for expensive work. Often the work is started immediately. We would advise people, not to engage with anybody who cold calls you on the phone (even if they suggest they are calling on behalf of a company who you may historically had dealings with).

Please consider carefully, any green energy products as while they can make savings in the long run, they may also not provide you with the return suggested. They can also have knock on consequences, as some mortgage providers may not loan on properties, with spray foam loft insulation etc. So if you are considering any of these sorts of products – think carefully about the purchase, get independent advice and shop around. Preferably using a trader who is on an approved trader scheme such as ‘Buy with confidence’, ‘Traders4U’ or ‘TrustMark’.

Please also be a good neighbour and look out for your elderly vulnerable neighbours and report any suspicious work. To report any concerns or get more advice please contact the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline 08082231133.

Kind regards
