The Great Arab Revolt Project, led by Professor Nick
Saunders and Dr Neil Faulkner (both at the time attached to Bristol University), was
a ten-year modern conflict archaeology investigation in the deserts of southern
Jordan. The GARP team explored ruined railway stations, hilltop redoubts, Ottoman
army camps, Anglo-Arab camps, and known battle sites. The project, the first of its
kind, made a major contribution to understanding the First World War in Arabia and
Syria and to providing context for the career of the legendary ‘Lawrence of Arabia’.
