Drivers have been warned of a closure of a stretch of the M4, as postponed resurfacing work begins this weekend.

The M4 heading eastbound between junctions 13 for Newbury and Chieveley and 12 for Theale will be closed for resurfacing work.

The closure will be in place from 9pm on Friday, October 16 through to 6am on Monday, October 19.

It is needed to allow the materials being used to resurface the motorway to cool sufficiently.

The material will be laid out in layers on the carriageway.

The M4 westbound will be unaffected during these works.

This work was originally due to take place from Friday, October 2 to Monday, October 5, but was postponed due to heavy rain as Storm Alex swept in.

The work is not part of the £848m M4 Smart Motorway project, which will convert the hard shoulder into a fourth traffic lane and introduce new overhead signals to manage and inform drivers.

M4 closure diversion route

Drivers are urged to allow more time for their journeys throughout the weekend.

To avoid the closure, drivers will need to leave the M4 at junction 13, heading south down the A34 and A339 into Newbury.

From there, you can use the A4 heading east, which will take you all the way to rejoining the M4 at junction 12.
