A handful of weekend closures will affect drivers travelling on the M4.

A stretch of the motorway is set to be closed in both directions from junction 5 to junction 4b for the entire weekend. There is also an overnight slip road closure at Winnersh and a carriageway closure near Swindon.

Although the roll out of smart motorways has been paused, until five years of data is available from existing schemes, work is still continuing to complete the £848m project in Berkshire.

The National Highways project will see the M4 converted into a smart motorway, four running lanes with no hard shoulder between junction 3 at Hayes and junction 12 for Theale. Emergency refuge bays are being fitted alongside the carriageway at regular intervals.

As a result, the M4 will be closed from 11pm on Friday, January 21, between j5 Langley and j4b for the M25, until the early hours of Monday, January 24.

Drivers heading towards London or Heathrow Airport may be affected by the full weekend closure, and are warned to leave more time for their journeys.

All traffic will be diverted off the motorway and a signed diversion via local road networks will be in place. The road is expected to reopen by 6am on the Monday.
