The police have received a call from a local bank as a customer is attempting to withdraw £20,000 in cash and giving evasive answers to the questions raised by the Banking Protocol. As this would be a very unusual withdrawal for that customer, they believe he is being scammed and refusing to hand over the cash.
THE BANKING PROTOCOL
The Banking Protocol, is there to protect customers from frauds and scams. As frauds are so common and can steal thousands of pounds from unsuspecting / vulnerable residents. It comes into operation whenever anyone makes an unusual withdrawal, which out of the ordinary for them. When the teller attempts to organise the withdrawal, the computer checks the account and stops the transaction. The teller is then prompted to ask a long list of questions about the withdrawal, to ensure the withdrawal is genuine.
Victims of frauds and scams are often provided with a list of answers, in case the Protocol is invoked. In this case, the teller did not think the answers being given were genuine and became suspicious.
In those cases, the police are called to see if they can verify the information being given.
If you wish to make an out of the ordinary withdrawal, be prepared to answer these questions – they are there to protect you !
NEXT: WE HAD A CASE OF AN OLD STANDARD SCAM:
An elderly woman was withdrawing cash from an ATM, when a woman tapped her on the shoulder and said there was a £5 note on the floor beside her that may have dropped out of her purse. She thanked her, withdrew her cash and walked away. Later in the Nicholson Centre, the same woman came up again and apologised, saying the £5 note was hers – could she have it back. The woman opened her purse and a male associate of the woman reached over and snatched her cash and bank cards. Ref. No: 43220098325
NEXT: Police and Crime Commissioner’s (PCC) survey on the support needs of victims of crime
The PCC has launched an anonymous online survey seeking views to help inform possible options for the future commissioning of services. The survey is capturing the views and experiences of victims of crime as well as professionals who work directly with victims or refer people into victims’ services such as police officers, social workers and doctors. Police officers and staff who are working with victims or referring victims to support are encouraged to complete the online survey. The survey will be open until 12pm on 6 April.

NEXT: Trading Standards seize almost 200 packs of illicit cigarettes with help from sniffer dog Yoyo
Almost 200 packs of illicit cigarettes have been seized by the Royal Borough’s Trading Standards team.
Officers carried out checks at retailers in Windsor, Ascot and the surrounding area and employed the help of search dog Yoyo during the operation.
Yoyo can detect tobacco located in hidden places and at one business 190 packs of cigarettes, all of which had foreign labelling contrary to UK law, were discovered. The team also seized 14 tubs of shisha tobacco with no labelling, and 11 packs of cigars, also with foreign labelling, from the same business.
The visits were carried as part of Operation Cece, which is a National Trading Standards and HM Revenue & Customs initiative to tackle the illegal tobacco trade. A specialist dog handler and Yoyo joined Trading Standards for the operation last week.

Smoke alarms give you the few extra seconds you need to escape in a fire. RBFRS recommends weekly testing to ensure your smoke detectors are still in working order. To test a smoke detector, simply press the button and listen for the beep.
While most homes across the country now have an alarm fitted, most people are not aware that the average alarm has a lifespan of just ten years and then needs replacing.
